The total population of the Finnøy community is 2800, but during the summer season the number is doubled, because of the tourism. There are many straits and coves ideal for boating and bathing. The fjords are also ideal for windsurfing, sailing and other sea-sports activities. If you go on shore, you can experience the Ryfylke at its best. You will find woods and moores with a rich wildlife, beaches and islets with a wide variety of birds and plants.
Farming employs 1/3 of the work stock of the Finnøy community. Finnøy farmers produce about 1/3 of Norway's total production of tomatoes. Agriculture is also a growing trade.
Archaeological findings in Dyrnes (Bjergøy) shows that people have lived here for 5-6000 years. One has to mention medieval churches, runes, graves and small castles.
THE ISLANDS
FOGN Probably most known by boat-tourists. In Rossøy, a recreational area, there are hiking-possibilities. Fogn provides good fishing.
TALGJE A small, peaceful island, where trade consists mainly of agricultural activities. Many safe harbours, and good fishing. Bycyble-riders and other day-tourists can visit the old stonechurch, the market garden, study archaeological findings or just take a relaxing swim.
HALSNØY Is a long-stretched island with a beautiful nature. The Skartveit-water, in the middle of the island, nearly divides the island. The mountain, Eikefjellet, is 211 metres above the sea-level. From the top of it you can see the whole community. In the mountain-side there are several rare flowers and some bushes. Also a good place for boating. visit the cove, Naustvika, where you can take a swim. You can also find old burial places and a local king's headstone. The trade of most of the people on this island is within agriculture, some aquaculture and boatbuilding.
BYRE, BOKN, MÅLØY These three island are situated between the area Fisterlandet and the island Finnøy. The land is very fertile. Besides traditional animal-farming, many people grow fruits as their most important trade. There are many cabins in the area, nevertheless, with its many coves, its a popular place for boating.
FINNØY The community-center Judaberg, Finnøy is a communication-wize junction in the middle of the community. The bathing place Kvitevik and the hiking area Teigen are frequently used, and they are both adjusted for wheel-chair-users. If you travel by bicycle, you can experience Finnøy up close. You can go from Ladstein, to the Cleng Peerson-house, then to Teigen, or right to Judaberg. On this stretch you have Finnøy Fjordsenter and Utssyn Youth Hostel, where you can spend the night. From Judaberg you can go to Folke Helle on Mjølsnes and to the Hesby Church where you find several monuments. The road makes a turn in Hesbysvingen2, you can then go and see; a Niels Henrik Abel and vicar-couple, the sports ground on Kvame, the cove of Steinnesvåg or to Sevheim. You can in Sevheim see an old millstone. If the weather is nice, you can end the day by taiking a swim in Kvitevik, before you go head back to Ladstein.
SJERNARØYANE Bjergøy, Aubø, Kyrkjøy og Tjul, Helgøy, Nord-Talgje, og Nord-Hidle Many travellers have called Ryfylke a paradise in Rogaland, and Sjernarøyane an Eden in this paradise. 8 settled islands with dozens of islets and skerries. An eldorado for cruising the fjords, fertile beautiful nature, good fishing - peace and calm. OMBO When you go onshore Edssund, 60km2 of Ryfylke-nature is waiting for you. Ombo inhabits about 310. In the moore there are many good spots for fishing. In the woods you can observe elk, deer and roedeer. There is also a variety of birds. There are marked tracks which makes Ombo a good place for hiking.
